Chapter Two - Meet and Greet

Pride and Liberty prepared for their first day of school and both were very anxious. However where Liberty was nervous about being around a lot of people, Pride was preoccupied with thoughts of his onyx eyed stranger. ‘I wonder if I’ll even see him today?’ he thought to himself as Aulia drove them to school.

“Will you two be okay walking back on your own or shall I arrange for someone to pick you up? I have a couple of errands to run so I don’t know when I’ll be back,” Aulia asked as she stopped in front of the school.
“Don’t worry it’s not too far,” said Liberty “I’ll remember.”
“Very well. Good luck you two,” she said as they exited the car then Aulia drove away. Pride and Liberty turned to face the school. They didn’t realize just how elite Seiryu Academy was until they saw the many limos and fancy cars dropping off students. Some stared as they slowly walked into the school holding hands.
“Be strong.” Pride whispered to Liberty who nodded. Pride tried to put on a smile as people stared whereas Liberty scowled making many turn away. They entered their homeroom class which went completely silent. The only two empty chairs were in the middle of the room. They sat down just as their teacher entered the room.
“Good morning class.”
“Good morning Hirota-sensei.”
“We have a pair of new students joining us. Would you two please stand and introduce yourselves.”
Pride stood up first and Liberty reluctantly followed. Pride was nervous; he wanted to make a good first impression. Liberty knew that her odd appearance would give people an instant impression of her and she did not have the patience to sway them differently.
“My name is Tachibana Pride
“And I am Tachibana Liberty.”
“We are from Hokkaido and we’ve been home schooled most of our lives,” said Pride telling them a lie.
“What activities do you enjoy?” Hirota-sensei asked
“Er I like to practice Kendo and martial arts,” said Pride saying the first thing that came to his mind. He nudged Liberty.
“I enjoy reading and playing the violin,” she said which wasn’t a complete lie. Liberty had been playing the violin since she was a child.
“Thank you very much for introducing yourselves you may be seated.”
Pride released a sigh of relief as he sat down feeling like the worst was over. People whispered around them as Hirota-sensei went over the day’s lesson. In the middle of class, a student walked in.
“Sorry to disturb the class sensei but President Takahashi has an announcement he wants me to make on behalf of the student council,” said the boy
“Please proceed,” said Hirota-sensei
The boy nodded then walked to the top of the classroom holding up a piece of paper.
“To my fellow Third years as you know, we have tragically lost our Vice President to a different school so we are in need of a new one. Since we cannot have a proper election in the middle of term, any student who think they have what it take to be the Vice President please see me. I will interview people for the position and the best qualified candidate will be announced at the end of the month. Needless to say all candidates must have excellent grades. Can’t wait to see who will try for the position.
Good luck.
That is all.” The boy bowed then left. The room erupted into excited chatter.
“In wonder who’s going to try?”
“This is the first time anything like this has happened.”
“Trust King Taka to make something as simple choosing a Vice President into a contest of who can impress him the most.”
“Is the school really going to allow such a thing?”
“Of course he’s King Taka.”
“Excuse me class but this is neither the time nor the place to be discussing this,” said Hirota-sensei loudly and the classroom went silent.
“That’s a very odd way to pick a Vice President,” Pride whispered to liberty
“You mean stupid,” she replied.
As soon as class was over the chattering started all over again. Pride was vaguely interested in this person they all ‘King Taka’ whereas Liberty tried to ignore them.
She was grateful that they were now too distracted to stare at her. Except for one boy in particular who could not keep his eyes off her. However he did not look scared or put off by her. In fact he looked rather intrigued. Liberty could not his face clearly but his eyes shown out clearly. Liberty had never seen such stunning green eyes before. His hair was dirty blond and spiked. He wore a few earrings on his ear and a chocker around his neck. Suddenly the boy turned to face her directly and started daringly into her eyes.  Liberty could almost feel his eyes taking in every inch of her body. She felt uncomfortable under his gaze and quickly turned away from him. She regained her composure and looked cautiously over her shoulder only to find that the boy was gone. She looked around the classroom but he was no where in sight. Liberty sat pondering what just happened completely ignoring the commotion around her.
Pride was too busy listening to the conversations to notice Liberty’s discomfort.
“Are you going to try to be the next Vice President Tanaka?”
“You’d be a shoe in Tanaka, you ran in the last election and you only lost by a small number of votes.”
“Yes it seems only natural that I get the position,” said one boy pompously. “I don’t see why President Takahashi is even considering anyone else I am the obvious choice and one is stupid enough to go against me.”
“King Taka must obviously think there is someone better for the job or he would not be doing this in the first place Tanaka.”
“You people are being played by that pretty boy Takahashi. The sooner I get on the student council the sooner I knock that fake king off his thrown.”
“You wish Tanaka.”
This ‘Kin Taka’ obviously had a lot of power over the students and the class was split with some of them rallying for Tanaka and the most behind Takahashi for a different Vice-President.

By the end of their next class Pride found out more about the person they called ‘King Taka’. He apparently ran unchallenged for the class Presidency race, since the other two candidates dropped out halfway through. He was also very good looking according to the girls but he never dated anyone since he came to this school only a little over a year ago.
When it was time for their lunch break, Pride and Liberty left the classroom and followed the other students in their class to the café.
“Ni-san?”
“Hai”
“This school is weird.”
Pride chuckled and took his sister’s hand. “Yes it is weird but I think we’ll like it here once people get use to us.” He could hear people whispering about them as they passed.
“I hope you’re right Ni-san.”
After getting their lunch, they sat down at an empty table and began to eat. Their lunch went undisturbed until a first year girl shyly approached their table. Pride turned to look at her and she blushed furiously.
“Er Tachibana-sempai? She muttered as she avoided eye contact.
“yes I’m Tachibana Pride.”
“There is someone who would like to meet with you. If you follow me I will take you to his table,” she said and Pride’s eyes widened.
“Don’t go, it’s probably a trick,” said Liberty
“More reason for me to go,” said Pride “We have to show them that we won’t take any crap from these people.”
“Fine go. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Pride nodded then he got out of his seat and stood in front of the girl.” Lead the way” he said and the started walking towards the end of the cafeteria. What was waiting for him on the other side, Pride did not know. He knew who he wanted it to be but he did not know what he’d get. And what if it was him and he turned out to be a completely different person? What if it had been too good to be true?
The girl stopped in front of a large table surrounded by people. Pride recognized some of them from his class but most of them he did not know. They stared at him and then the three people in front of him moved away to reveal a seated boy with a satisfied grin on his face.
“So Pride, what’s my name?” he asked
Pride gulped then said “Takahashi” confidently. He waited then the boy jumped up out of his seat enthusiastically and put his hands on Pride’s shoulders.
“Welcome Pride.”

~*~Liberty~*~

Liberty watched as Pride sat down and was welcomed into the group. She was half relieved and half jealous that he’d been so easily accepted. She felt like she was much worse off than her brother. Liberty has the fate of the world resting on her shoulders, she has the power that keeps from getting close to people, she has the most unusual eyes out of the two of them. ‘I can’t think that way,” she said angrily to herself. ‘We’re in this together.’ She looked over to him and saw him laughing and smiling with his new friends and liberty tried had not to feel jealous. However it was difficult when she was sitting at a table alone with everyone around her thinking she’s a freak. Liberty started down at her food picking at it. Suddently someone sat down directly in front of her and Liberty looked up to see that it was the boy from earlier.
“You’ve got a lot of nerve you know that?” she said angrily as she stared daggers at him.
“That so?” said the boy and he cocked his head to the right revealing a lip ring on his bottom lip.
“Yes you do as a matter of fact. I do not appreciate being stared at for one and two, you are very rude to just sit down in front of me without introducing yourself and asking if you may join me. I don’t know where you come from but this is Japan and that sort of behavior is considered rude.” Liberty started angrily at the boy who looked positively stunned by her words. He quickly recovered himself and stood up.
“Please forgive my rudeness Tachibana-san,” he said with over politeness. “My name is Kohaku Nishikado. Pleased to meet your acquaintance. He bowed deeply but Liberty wasn’t impressed, in fact she looked more annoyed than before.
“Now you’re just making fun of me,” she said
“Honestly I’m not,” said Nishikado “I’ve just spent too much time living abroad. I only just returned to Japan after spending the past four years in America.” Nishikado smiled and it was the non creepy, non-suggestive smile he had shown her. It wasn’t until then that Liberty realized that she could not hear Nishikado’s thoughts nor feel his emotions. She tired to tap into his thoughts but she got nothing. She could read the people sitting at other tales but not the person sitting directly in front of her.
“Is something wrong Tachibana-san?” he asked looking genuinely concerned since she was staring intently at him with confused eyes. “Trying to get me back for earlier?”
“No,” she said this was the first person outside of her family that she could not read. It was frightening but at the same time it was a welcomed change. However Liberty was no fool. She was going to be wary of the strange boy.
“And about that whole staring at you thing, you just looked like someone I knew back in the States. Same color eyes but hers were contacts.” He said gesturing to Liberty’s silver orbs.
“Are you wearing contacts Nishikado-san?”
“Nope. I’ve always had these eyes.” He said proudly.
“And the school doesn’t mind you coming in with hair like that and all those accessories like the choker and lip ring?” she asking giving him a reproving look.
“My father is one Seiryu’s biggest benefactors. So the teachers don’t say anything about the way I look.” He said casually as he sat back in his with his left arm across the chair next to him.
“I see. So why are you here sitting with a nobody freak like me?” Liberty had her arms folded in front of her with a very ‘don’t fuck with me’ look in her eyes.
For the second time Nishikado looked taken aback.
“I guess I’ll cut to the chase. You look interesting and I thought you might want some company. You seem a bit different from the usual boring students in this school.”
“You’re going to have to do better than that,” said Liberty getting up.
“Hey what’s up? What did I do wrong?” he asked as she picked up her tray.
“Sorry but I’m not the type to take people for face value. Especially overly polite people.” She said truthfully.
“Don’t you want a friend?” he asked
“Don’t need friends,” she said flatly turning to look towards her brother who looked up at her at the same time. He gestured for her to come. “It was…interesting sitting with you Nishikado-san. Let’s not do it again.” And with that Liberty walked away hoping he wouldn’t follow.
